The Vegan Dog

Peanut Butter Kongs

Andrew is more-or-less "Keeper of the Dogs" in this house. And I suppose that's how it should be. He is the dog trainer. But I try to help when I can. One of the things I don't help out enough with is making frozen peanut butter kongs for the pups at night. Sometimes I remember. Unless Tiki does her daily round-up (she literally collects all the kongs in the house and brings them to me), I'm generally too lazy to do it myself. But when I do, I make sure Andrew knows he's loved, with a greasy little note for him to find in the morning. That note basically lives in our fridge, just right of the Tofutti cuties.

But that's not what this post is about. It's about veganism and dogs. I could go into a long rant about how and in what ways dogs can be vegan, and I'll be met with mixed opinions I'm sure. But for the sake of brevity, I'll say two things:

(1) My dogs have really sensitive digestive tracks - Tiki in particular. They're prone to skin allergies and upset tummies. For that reason, we stick to a mostly raw, mostly meat diet. Fillers and meals tend to upset them in particular. It's hard as a vegan to cope with this at times, but we do our best to make sure that we meet our dogs' needs.
(2) My dogs love vegan food. Georgia Peaches chows on carrots like no other. They would eat peanut butter all day, every day if they could. For this reason, I take heart in the fact that AT THE VERY LEAST, I can make these little jerks some vegan dog treats.

So, whether your dog eats a vegan diet or not, here is round-up of ethically delicious dog treats that I absolutely adore:

  1. Vegan, Gluten-free Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits
  2. Pumpkin 'n Oats Dog Treats
  3. Sweet Potato Dog Chews
  4. Banana Chips
  5. And my personal favorite, a frozen Kong full of Peanut Butter :)

  2. Science is driving me crazy! I might have the dogs back as vegans in no time... depending on how this last bit of research goes.
