The Vegan Shopping List

I don't buy extravagant ingredients and I generally cook with the same ingredients. So if you want to cook like me and not run to the store every 2 seconds, here is my go-to list of pantry items.

The Whole Foods Run:
I don't do this trip often, but these are the 4 very essential items I have on hand all the time.

  • Large jar of vegenaise (Imperative! Always on hand!)
  • Large tub of earth balance (It's just economical)
  • Nutritional Yeast (I always have this!!)
  • A few pounds of raw cashews

The Kroger Run:

  • Produce
    • Organic arugula
    • Organic baby spinach
    • Broccoli
    • 2 bunches of Kale - usually purple
    • 2 bags of organic baby carrots
    • Bag of organic yellow onions
    • Bag of organic yukon gold potatoes
    • A couple sweet potatoes
    • Several organic roma tomatoes
    • 1-2 bags of brussels sprouts
    • Organic mushrooms - generally baby bella, but sometimes portabellos or shitake
    • 1 bunch organic bananas
    • 3-4 organic avocados - and 1 non-organic in case I'm in a pinch (the organic ones ripen slowly and are generally not ripe at the grocery store)
    • A few lemons, limes, and oranges
    • If I'm baking, fresh blueberries
    • Fresh cilantro
    • Garlic
  • Starches/Wheat products
    • A box or six of whole wheat penne, rotini, and sometimes gnocchi
    • Everything bagels
    • Whole wheat bagels
    • Whole wheat bread
    • Brown or white basmati rice
    • Minute brown rice (again for when I'm rushed)
    • Organic quinoa
  • Proteins
    • 2-3 bricks of tempeh
    • 2 containers of tofu
    • Gardein chicken tenders, or Simple Truth Meatless Crispy Tenders (vegan and cheaper than gardein) - usually 2 bags
    • Gardein meatless crumbles, Simple Truth Meatless Crumbles (vegan and cheaper than garden) - 1 bag
    • Garden burger chipotle black bean patties (or whatever veggie burger you like) - 2 boxes
    • BEANS - black beans and chickpeas
  • Misc. Prepackaged Foods
    • Better-than-chicken, bouillon cubes
    • Lara bars, luna bars, and clif bars
    • 3-5 cans of no salt added french cut green beans (I'm lazy and super addicted!)
    • A few cans of coconut milk
    • Justin's Nut Butter - usually maple almond
    • Peanut Butter by the tubs - for us and our dogs :)
    • Vegan chocolate chips
    • Instant oatmeal
    • Popcorn
In the spice cabinet all the time:
  • Salt & Pepper - duh
  • Paprika (usually smoked)
  • Chipotle Powder
  • Chili Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Curry Powder
  • Creole Seasoning
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Parsley
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Dill
  • Oregano
  • Turmeric
Essential Oils:
  • Canola
  • Cold Pressed Olive
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Peanut Oil - best oil for frying IMHO
Essential Condiments:
  • A mustard you love - I get chipotle mustard or spicy mustard
  • Ketchup
  • I said it before and I'll say it again, vegenaise, the best damn vegan mayo
  • BBQ sauce - I love the Jack Daniel's Original Recipe
  • Sriracha or any other great hot sauce you love
  • Jarred & sliced jalapeƱos - they are a bitch to cut up yourself and you can control the heat better by buying them this way; pickled, no-heat, full-heat, etc.
  • Relish
  • Good, pure maple syrup - essential for making vegan sauces and baking
  • Soy sauce or Bragg's Liquid Aminos

And amazingly, I tend to keep this along with miscellaneous toiletries under $120 every 2 weeks. I don't buy everything every time, but I keep it all stocked.
